Spring Ahead~ Look how they’ve grown The ducklings have grown so much.  They are almost the same size as their parents now.  Note Alexander and a few of his wives in the background watching through the fence.

Swimming in a plastic bag pool When my assistant Caleb and I were doing work on their yard the day before, we didn't realize we had left behind a trash bag.  This was the first day the ducks were allowed to bring their ducklings out of the house/run into their yard.  They were so tiny before this that they would have otherwise walked right through the 1" holes in the fencing into one of the other animals yards which would have been a disaster!  Anyhoo, I checked on them quite often throughout the day and was tickled pink to see this little scene of Bella showing them how to swim in a tiny puddle that had formed on top of the plastic bag.  So, I quickly got a shovel and made a slightly bigger, deeper hole which had a natural ramp for entering and exiting and laid the bag on top of it, anchored it down with a few rocks and poured some water into it.  As soon as I moved back out of touching zone Bella promptly brought them right back to it and they all had a great time.

Bellas’ first ducklings! Bella is in the midst of hatching her first ducklings.  Out of six eggs five hatched but sadly two died early on.  She ended up with 3 healthy ducklings of which turned out to be two greenhead males and one bluehead female.  She was very stressed when I tried to view the ducklings so I "tried" not to do it too much.

Happily settled in They are both happily settled in now and enjoying foraging around in their yard.

Bantam Duck House This is their 4' x 16' duck house/run.  When I originally built it I didn't take snow load into consideration and with all the snow we had winter of 2010/2011 the roof almost caved in.  A new roof is in order before winter 2011/2012 sets in!   The big duck run/house is in the background.

A juvenile pair of bantam ducks arrive! A six month old pair of blue head Australian Spotted bantam ducks arrived today.  This is the box they were shipped in.  Needless to say, they were a little leery of me when I gently opened the box and peered in.
